Super-Fast Business Broadband

A common complaint in many an office across Kent is that the internet is slow.

It can be frustrating being left waiting when you really need to get things done. It is not always the speed of the internet, it can also be other factors like the WIFI or the cabling you have in place but often it is the speed of your internet connection that can be the problem. Why is it so hit and miss?

There are a few factors at play here, first your broadband bandwidth is shared with other businesses in the immediate area; this is referred to as “contention ratio”. A common contention ratio is around 20/1 which means that there could be another 19 other business all sharing elements of your broadband bandwidth. Now not all of them are using lots of their broadband at the same time in most cases but during peak hours you will find that your internet does appear to be slower than normal.

Another part of the challenge is the increased demand within your business. We use the internet for more and more things now and growing businesses may not have looked at the additional staff and devices that are all relying on the internet every day.

What can you do about it?

There are a few things you could do with your equipment, but they won’t have any effect on the contention ratio we discussed above. However, there is another option that will make a huge difference.

A leased line fibre connection will give you amazing speeds both upstream and down and it has a contention ration of 1/1 meaning that it is dedicated your business only.

What do we mean by amazing speeds up and down?

When internet speeds are advertised they are often referring to the download speed. However, when you use the internet and you upload a file to a cloud-based storage or system you are, in fact, using the upload speed. Broadband speeds are not the same for the upload as they are the download. If you run a speed test on your broadband line you will see a big difference between the two. If your download speed is around 30MB you will often see an upload speed of around 1MB.

With a Fibre connection from our partner Orbital, you will have matching upload and download speeds of a minimum of 100MB. Can you imagine the difference in performance if your business was using a fibre connection?

How much does Fibre cost?

Yes, Fibre is going to cost you more money compared to a broadband line but hopefully, you can see the massive value it will bring to your business by having a business grade internet connection. You are looking at spending around £299 per month for a 100MB symmetrical connection or £399 per month for 100MB upload and a massive 1GB download speed.

Why now is a great time to upgrade your internet connection

The UK government are committed to getting more and more businesses using fibre internet connections and as a result, have set up a scheme to encourage businesses to upgrade to a fibre connection. The scheme is called the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme and provides some funding to cover the costs of getting you connected to your new faster internet service which could run into a few thousand pounds normally.

Who is eligible for this scheme?

The scheme is aimed at companies with less than 249 employees and a turnover of less than €50 million. Your new internet connection must also be at least double the speed of your current connection.

When does the scheme close?

The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme has been running since the end of 2017 and has an initial budget of £2million. This part of the scheme will end either when the budget runs out or by March 2019 whichever comes first.

How does it work?

The scheme is actually very simple. A quick chat with your account manager will help you determine if you qualify for the scheme and if there is budget still available. We then help you choose the right connection for your business and an order is placed. We then apply for the voucher on your behalf and once the new line is live and has been tested and confirmed then there are no fees for the installation.

This will save you potentially thousands of pounds and provide you with a dedicated super-fast fibre connection that also comes with key business benefits that will help with business continuity and disaster recovery planning such:

  • 4-hour services level agreement – Broadband normally does not have any such SLA
  • Free Backup Broadband Line where available.
  • 24x7x365 proactive monitoring
  • 24x7x365 UK support line
  • Guaranteed speed and bandwidth availability
  • Unlimited usage with zero restrictions

There really has not been a better time to take advantage of this offer while it lasts and move your business to a faster business grade internet provision that will ensure your staff remain productive always and future proof your business as you grow.
